KUD Defined
A KUD is a classic tool of backwards design that helps educators distinguish among what they want students to Know, Understand, and be able Do.
Know...particular facts/terms/knowledge associated with the learning;
Understand...limited # of big ideas that recur over time to cultivate consolidation;
Do...transferable skills (aligned with school / system - wide learning outcomes).
Lynn Erickson reminds us why a two-dimensional curriculum (one-driven only by facts and skills) misses the power of a three-dimensional curriculum (one driven by concepts, transferable skills, and facts). Scroll through her slides, posted here, to get a feel for her thinking.

And here's a KUD that describes what a teacher needs to Know, Understand, and be able to Do as they transition to standards-based learning and reporting.
